The new Hybrid OR at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is targeted to open at the end of this month. State-of-the-art imaging technology is combined with the function and sterility of a modern surgical suite to provide the most advanced environment for performing a new wave of cardiac and vascular procedures.
The $5 million futuristic space encompasses 1,450 square feet and
fosters collaboration among an interdisciplinary team of cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons and anesthesiologists. With superior precision and control, complex cases can be treated in a room designed to handle both minimally
invasive and open procedures.
"Combining percutaneous interventional and open surgical procedures is the next step in the evolution of cardiac and vascular care," said Marc Cohen, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. "The more sophisticated procedures, such as TAVI, require interventionalists and surgeons working side by side."
The hybrid OR makes it possible to perform image-guided surgery and is the safest environment to perform minimally invasive cases that may require conversion to traditional open surgery. The flexibility of ceiling-mounted technology such as cath lab x-ray imaging, a hemodynamics monitoring system, integrated ultrasound, as well as a perfusion station, ensures the ideal space for performing the most advanced techniques.
