Our
premier cardiac services provide immediate access to highly
sophisticated heart surgery. Members of our surgical team
are recognized as national leaders in the field of cardiothoracic
surgery and are advancing the latest minimally invasive techniques
that offer patients faster recovery and fewer complications.
The integrated cardiac surgical program located at Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center and Saint Barnabas Medical Center
has seen a dramatic increase in volume of cases in recent
years -- making us the leader in the State of New Jersey
in performing beating heart surgeries. The center’s
reputation for excellence has also made it an educational
resource for cardiac surgeons throughout the northeast.

Robotic surgery is one of the fastest growing innovations
in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Our program was the
first in New Jersey to use a robotic surgery system for atrial
septal defect closure and valve repair. The depth of our
robotic surgery services are demonstrated by Newark Beth
Israel Medical Center’s designation as the only facility
in the Eastern U.S. and is one of only three nationwide to
offer training on the model “S” da Vinci® Surgical
Robot System.
The most common beating heart surgery performed at the Barnabas Health Heart Centers is coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).
The technique avoids the use of the heart-lung machine and
its known risks. During beating heart surgery the heart is
allowed to continue to beat while bypass grafts are constructed.
