The Epilepsy Surgery Center at Saint Barnabas offers comprehensive surgical evaluation and treatment for epilepsy. Almost 400 epilepsy surgery procedures have been performed to date. Dr. Werner Doyle is one of most experienced specialist epilepsy surgeons in the country with over 3,000 epilepsy surgery procedures completed, including almost 800 vagus nerve stimulator implantations. Services include the full range of testing to localize the epilepsy focus including video-EEG in our 12-bed purpose-built epilepsy monitoring unit, Neuropsychology, Wada testing, 3-Tesla MRI, PET, and Magnetoencephalography (MEG) interpretation. Surgeries offered include single stage resective epilepsy surgery including temporal lobectomy, 2 or 3 stage epilepsy surgery guided using implanted subdural and depth EEG electrodes, functional hemispherectomy, corpus callosotomy, and the vagus nerve stimulator (VNS). Extraoperative brain mapping using the implanted subdural electrodes is performed by Drs. Geller, Widdess-Walsh, and Santschi of the INN. Intraoperative brain mapping and electrocorticography is perfomed when necessary. A specialized team of neuro-intensive care and epilepsy nurses and an epilepsy nurse-practitioner trained in the care of the epilepsy surgery patient provide outstanding nursing expertise. A multi-disciplinary team consisting of epileptologists, epilepsy nurses, neuro-anesthesiologists, physical, occupation and speech therapists combine to produce the best outcomes possible for the individual patient. The Epilepsy Surgery Center is also a research site for the implantation of the Neuropace (R) responsive neurostimulator device (2008).
