Father Feels Fortunate to Donate Kidney to Daughter

Wilson Aleman and Cristina

Wilson Aleman, 49, says that parents will do anything for their children. So when his daughter Cristina, 23, was diagnosed with Alport’s Syndrome, and needed a kidney transplant, he readily volunteered. Alport’s Syndrome is a hereditary disease that causes inflammation of the glomeruli, or small blood vessels in the kidneys, and eventually leads to kidney failure. Cristina began dialysis treatments in 2008 and received a kidney from her father in 2009.

Wilson donated his kidney to Cristina through the Living Donor Institute at the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. Long-recognized for its excellence in patient care, medical education, and research, Newark Beth Israel performed New Jersey’s first kidney transplant in 1967, and the state’s first living-related transplant in 1968. Since that time, more than 2000 kidney transplants have been performed at the Medical Center. Over the years, the program has continued to expand, combining personalized, compassionate care with cutting edge advances in medical technology.

Today, Cristina has returned to school full –time to pursue a career in nursing, and Wilson couldn’t be happier. “I feel honored that I could give my daughter a kidney,” says Wilson Aleman.

Newark Beth Israel’s Living Donor Institute promotes living donation as the best treatment option for patients with chronic kidney disease. Blending the most modern technology and resources with attentive personalized care, the Living Donor Institute provides comprehensive support for patients and their families throughout the process of obtaining a transplant and maintaining a healthy organ.

Living donation options include:

  • Living-Related Donor Transplantation
  • Emotionally-Related Donor Transplantation
  • Living Donor Kidney Exchange Program
  • Altruistic Living Donation
  • Program for Incompatible Transplants

It is easy to see why people prefer the premier program that has served New Jersey and out-of-state residents for more than 40 years in the field of renal transplantation.
