Saint Barnabas Physician Receives Prestigious Award

Livingston, N.J. - Recently, the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America, Inc., presented awards to two Saint Barnabas physicians, Stuart R. Geffner, M.D., and M. Isabel Roberti, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Geffner was selected to receive the 2005 National Medical Award for Excellence in Transplantation and Dr. Roberti the 2005 National Medical Award in Pediatric Nephrology.

Stuart R. Geffner, M.D.Dr. Geffner currently serves as Director of Transplant Surgery for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System where he has been responsible for building the Saint Barnabas kidney transplant program into one of the 10 largest kidney transplant centers in the United States. Dr. Geffner’s expertise in transplant surgery has led him to achieve medical “firsts” in New Jersey regarding transplant surgery. He was responsible for transplantation of the state’s youngest and smallest child and performed the state’s first isolated pancreas transplant.

He plays an active role in the community by serving as co-medical director of The New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network. And, he is involved with “Live from Kidney Transplant,” a series of live video telecasts of transplant surgery to high school students at Liberty Science Center.

Dr. Geffner holds a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School. From there, he went on to complete a general surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, where he served as chief resident in 1993. Dr. Geffner received fellowship training in multi-organ transplant surgery at the University of Wisconsin from 1993-1995. Following completion of his fellowship, Dr. Geffner returned to Saint Barnabas as an attending surgeon in general and transplant surgery. He is an avid sports fan and physical fitness enthusiast, having twice completed the New York City Marathon.

M. Isabel Roberti, M.D., Ph.D.Dr. Roberti serves as the Director of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation at Saint Barnabas Medical Center since 2003 and has been with the program since it was established in 1996 as its Associate Director. At the time, it was the first program of its kind in the state to provide complete renal care to children of all ages.

She hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she completed her medical degree, residency, and pediatric nephrology fellowship at the Escola Paulista de Medicina. Thereafter, she went on to complete an additional fellowship in pediatric nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. She also completed a Ph.D. in pediatrics at the Hospital Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. Roberti is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. She has held numerous academic appointments since 1990 and is currently Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She is the recipient of numerous honors and scholarships for her research in renal transplantation, immunosuppression and hypertension in children. She is a sought after lecturer and has written many journal articles, book chapters and abstracts.
