Renal Division Raises Awareness of Organ Donation

The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Saint Barnabas Heath Care System, one of the five largest programs among 240 in the United States, joins The Sharing Network of New Jersey during National Organ Donor and Tissue Awareness Week, April 18-24, 2010, to bring attention to the urgent need for organ donors in the state.

Currently there are over 106,000 Americans, nearly 2,800 of them in New Jersey, waiting for life-saving organ transplants. The good news is that this is a health crisis that we all have the power to cure. The bad news is that there are simply not enough donated organs, and each year, thousands die needlessly waiting for a transplant that could have saved their lives. We urge everyone to help end this organ donor shortage by joining the New Jersey Organ Tissue Registry. To become an organ donor, please call 1-800-SHARE-NJ or visit www.sharenj.org.

The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division, with programs at Newark Beth Israel and Saint Barnabas Medical Centers, is one of the world's most progressive transplant programs. In 2009, the Division achieved record-breaking volumes – performing 290 transplants, which included 140 living donor transplants.

The world-class Division offers New Jersey’s only Living Donor Institute to promote living donation as the best treatment option for patients with chronic kidney disease. Blending the most modern technology and resources with attentive personalized care, the Living Donor Institute provides comprehensive support for patient and their families throughout the process of obtaining a transplant and maintaining a healthy organ. Living donation options include:
