Donation After Death: Turning a Fatal Accident or Illness Into a Gift of Life for Individuals with Chronic Renal Disease

The Sharing Network Honors Donors and Their Families For Passing on the Gift of Life

Each year, donor family quilts are on display at The Sharing Network Donor Recognition Program. The Sharing Network originated “Quilts of Love” to provide a way for New Jersey donor family members to pay tribute to their loved ones. The quilts, usually designed by donor family members who incorporate a personality trait, hobby, career or sport of their loved one, also promote organ and tissue donation.

“The true heroes behind the miracle of transplantation are the donors who gave the gift of life and the families who made it possible. Words cannot possibly express the gratitude of those whose lives have been helped.” These powerful words are inscribed on the Gift of Life Donor Medal that recipients present to donor families at The Sharing Network’s Donor Recognition Program. The annual event recognizes the altruism of families who donate the organs and tissue of a loved one following death.

“This event provides families the opportunity to affirm their decision to donate, often made at the time of a sudden tragic accident,” says Family Support Manager, Mary Ellen McGlynn. “At the same time, it allows recipients to acknowledge the gift and express their thanks.”

The 2001 program was highlighted by thoughtful reflections by donor family members, transplant recipients and health care professionals who opened the program. A commemorative video of poignant photos of the donors followed, along with presentations of Certificates of Appreciation and Donor Medals to the donor families, and a memorial candle-lighting ceremony. Commented one family member, “It was the most magnificent and special program I ever attended.”
