Transplantation Symposia: Promoting Physician Education and Discussion

The Saint Barnabas Health Care System Renal and Pancreas Transplant Centers and Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation offer continuing education programs for physicians throughout the region who want to keep abreast of the latest developments in research and clinical management of children and adults with kidney disease.

According to Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., Chief of the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Centers, one of the goals of the symposia is to educate community nephrologists about the care and management of the post-transplant patient and to return patients who have received a transplant to the care of their referring nephrologist. “The long-term management of patients who have received a successful kidney transplant has become quite standard,” explains Dr. Mulgaonkar. “When nephrologists are educated on the latest medications, management, and potential problems, both the physicians and patients are confident in transferring follow-up care to the community setting.”

The first annual pediatric renal symposium, in October 2001, provided a forum for the exchange of ideas and issues surrounding renal medicine. “The goals were to help pediatricians recognize complex symptoms so they can refer patients in a timely manner and facilitate the continuity of care that these children and families require,” reflects Lewis Reisman, M.D., Director of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation. “Chronically ill children often have complicated medical histories and face a variety of psychosocial issues. They benefit greatly when care is coordinated with their pediatrician.”

Beyond the exchange of clinical information, Drs. Mulgaonkar and Reisman stress that a primary objective of their symposia is to build a close relationship with nephrologists and pediatricians in the region. “We are their advocates, as well as advocates for their patients,” explains Dr. Mulgaonkar.
