Our Team’s Accomplishments 2005

The Saint Barnabas Health Care System Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division continued to excel in the field of transplantation in 2005. As experts in the field, the team has contributed journal articles, made professional presentations to their peers and strived to make advances in the treatment of patients with renal failure.

RESEARCH AND PRESENTATIONS

• Single Center Experience with Steroid Avoidance after Renal Transplantation Utilizing Thymoglobulin Induction in Concert with Tacrolimus and Mycophenolate Mofetil or Sirolimus,

• An analysis of HIV Transplanted Patients and the Interaction of Immunosuppressant Medication with Protease Inhibitors, P. Kennedy, C. Rice, S. Mulgaonkar, A. Patel, submitted to NATCO, 2005 and accepted for oral presentation.

• Analysis of a Single Center Experience in Renal Transplantation of Elderly, T. Belica, S. Mulgaonkar, N. Patel, R. Dowell-Cherry, P. Kotch, submitted to NATCO 2005 and accepted for oral presentation.

• Impact of Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy on Early Allograft Function in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients, I Roberti et al., International Pediatric Transplant Assoc, 3rd World Congress accepted presented orally in Austria, August 2005.

• C1Q Nephropathy in Children: Variable Presentation, Pathology and Outcome, I Roberti et al., ASN 2005 accepted for poster presentation in PA, November 2005.

Dr. Mulgaonkar was invited to the European and International Solid Organ Transplant Meeting in Geneva Switzerland as a keynote speaker on a patient-related outcomes study. He also presented three additional poster sessions and one oral paper.

Dr. Mulgaonkar lectured locally and internationally in Paris as part of the faculty of Novartis’ Specialty Transplant Training for science liaisons.

• Preventing CMV Disease in Solid Organ Transplant Patients: Benefits and Current Strategies, M. Uknis, presented at Latin American Transplant Society Annual Meeting, Mexico, October 2005.

• Dosing and Efficacy of Valganciclovir for CMV Prophylaxis in Organ Transplant Patients Cytomegalovirus in Transplantation – Why We Must Challenge the Status Quo, M. Uknis, presented at Global Roche Advisory Board Meeting, Switzerland, October 2005.

AWARDS
Marie Morgievich, M.S., R.N., A.P.N.-C., Transplant Nurse Practitioner, and Moya Gallagher, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.R.N., Transplant Coordinator, were selected to receive the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Excellence in Caring Award. Both were honored in a ceremony this month citing their commitment to excellence in patient care.

• Stuart Geffner, M.D., and M. Isabel Roberti, M.D., were honored by the Kidney & Urology Foundation of America at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston, NJ in June, 2005. Dr. Roberti received the National Medical Award in Pediatric Nephrology. Dr. Geffner was the recipient of the National Medical Award in Transplantation.

EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION
• Moya Gallagher, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.R.N., Transplant Coordinator received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Peter’s College.

• Jennifer Hinkis-Siegel, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.T.C. and Tatiana Alvarez, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.T.C., Transplant Coordinators at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, received Level 3 Certification in the Professional Advancement System for nursing.
Bridget Barbuto, R.N., B.S.N., received Level 1 Certification this year.
