
Director of Renal and Pancreas Transplant Surgery
Stuart Geffner,
M.D., now serves as a full-time member of the Saint Barnabas
Health Care System Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division’s
new Department of Transplant Surgery. Dr. Geffner has been
associated with the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division
since 1995, serving as Director of Transplant Surgery and
Director of the Pancreatic Transplant Program at Saint Barnabas
Medical Center. Dr. Geffner has performed several "medical
firsts" in the State of New Jersey,
including performing a transplant on the youngest pediatric
patient in the state, New Jersey's first laparoscopic kidney
donation surgery, and the state's first isolated pancreas
transplant.
Dr. Geffner received his medical degree
from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey,
New Jersey Medical School and completed a fellowship in
transplant surgery at the University of Wisconsin Medical
School. A talented surgeon, he received the Herbert A Schulte
Award for excellence in surgery in 1992 and serves as Medical
Director of the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network.
Dr. Geffner is a published author and has made several
presentations at national surgical conferences.

Transplant Nephrologist
Anup Patel, M.D., joined the Saint
Barnabas Medical Center Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division
after completing an internal medicine residency and fellowships
in nephrology and transplant nephrology at the University
of Michigan. He received his medical degree with A.O.A. distinction
from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey,
New Jersey Medical School. An active researcher, Dr. Patel
has been involved in several major research endeavors in
the field of kidney transplantation. Dr. Patel is Board Certified
in internal medicine and nephrology.

Associate Director of Renal and Pancreas Transplant Surgery
Marc
Uknis, M.D., recently joined the Saint Barnabas Health Care
System Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division’s
new Department of Transplant Surgery. Previously he served
as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School
and was a staff Transplant and Trauma Surgeon at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital,
Boston. Most recently, Dr. Uknis was Director of Kidney and
Pancreas Transplantation and Associate Professor of Surgery,
Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at The University of
Massachusetts Medical School.
Dr. Uknis received his medical degree from
Temple University Medical School, Philadelphia, PA and
completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Transplant Immunopathology
at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his general
surgery residency, infectious disease fellowship, and transplant
surgery and immunology fellowship all at the University
of Minnesota. Respected internationally, Dr. Uknis is the
principle investigator of clinical research trials aimed
at preventing viral infections in solid organ transplant
patients. He maintains his appointment at the University
of Massachusetts Medical School as an Associate Professor
with ongoing basic science research in preventing complications
of diabetes through transplantation. He is an accomplished
professional speaker who has made presentations worldwide.
Dr. Uknis is the author or co-author of more than two dozen
original articles and reviews. Dr. Uknis serves as an editorial
expert in transplantation for WebMD and is also an ad hoc
reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation and
the Journal of Biotechnology.

Transplant Nephrologist
Francis Weng, M.D., recently joined
the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Renal and Pancreas Transplant
Division. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard
University, his medical degree from Columbia University College
of Physicians and Surgeons, and his internship and residency
training in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center,
New York City. He also completed clinical and research fellowships
in nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. During his fellowship, Dr. Weng
received both additional training in transplant nephrology
and his master of science degree in clinical epidemiology
from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s
Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Dr. Weng is Board Certified in internal
medicine and nephrology and is a member of the American
Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Transplantation,
and the National Kidney Foundation. He is the recipient
of research grants from the National Institutes of Health,
and his original research has been published in several
professional journals, including the Journal of the American
Society of Nephrology and the American Journal
of Kidney Diseases.
