Transplant Coordinator, was named the 2006 National Nursing
Spectrum Clinical Award Winner for her dedication to improving
the rate of living donor kidney transplantation for Hispanic
patients. An immigrant herself, Ms. Alverez has made it
easier for people in Central American countries to donate
a kidney to a loved one living in the United States. She
has translated documents and educational materials, coordinated
care, and facilitated a smooth process among foreign transplant
centers, US embassies, and the Renal and Pancreas Transplant
Division at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Thanks to
Ms. Alverez’ efforts the rate of Hispanic living
donor transplants performed at Newark Beth Israel Medical
Center has risen from 18 percent in 2001 to a high of 66
percent in the last few years.

Donor Committee for the United Network for Organ Sharing
(UNOS) and serves as Chair to the Sub-Committee for Best

Medical Center’s Excellence in Caring Award for her
continuous dedication to enhancing patient and peer satisfaction,
and supporting the hospital’s mission.
, Director of the Renal
and Pancreas Transplant Division, was awarded the Boston
College Graduate School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni
Award for 2006.
, Chief, Renal and
Pancreas Transplant Division, received the New Jersey Hospital
Association Healthcare Professional of the Year Award. Dr.
Mulgaonkar was honored for his considerable contributions
to the field of transplant medicine. He has been instrumental
in developing one of the world’s most progressive renal
and pancreas transplant programs, as well as innovative services
for both donors and recipients. Dr. Mulgaonkar created the
nation’s first Living Donor Institute, which is pioneering
an organ matching and exchange program in the tri-state area.
Dr. Mulgaonkar was also recognized in 2006 as one of the
United State’s Best Doctors by Best Doctor’s,
Inc.

Coordinator, received Level 1 and 2 Certification through
the Professional Advancement System for nursing.

of the highly specialized team at the Saint Barnabas
Health Care System Division of Pediatric Nephrology
and Transplantation, was profiled in the August 2006
issue of Nursing Spectrum. Ms. Orsini has helped
to provide care for 100 infants, children and teenagers
who received kidney transplants since the Division
of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation was established
10 years ago.

Transplant Coordinators – The
nursing staff is divided into
four areas covering the pre-transplant patient, hospitalization,
the post-transplant period and the transplant research
division.
All of the coordinators are registered nurses (RNs)
with
advanced degrees in nursing as well as extensive
training and
experience in transplantation.
