Transplant Team Members Receive Honors in 2006

Tatiana Alverez, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.T.C.,
Transplant Coordinator, was named the 2006 National Nursing Spectrum Clinical Award Winner for her dedication to improving the rate of living donor kidney transplantation for Hispanic patients. An immigrant herself, Ms. Alverez has made it easier for people in Central American countries to donate a kidney to a loved one living in the United States. She has translated documents and educational materials, coordinated care, and facilitated a smooth process among foreign transplant centers, US embassies, and the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Thanks to Ms. Alverez’ efforts the rate of Hispanic living donor transplants performed at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has risen from 18 percent in 2001 to a high of 66 percent in the last few years.
