Our Renal Teams' Accomplishments

The SBHCS Renal and Pancreas Transplant Centers continued to excel in the field of transplantation throughout 1999 thanks to the specialized staff members who comprise each team. As experts in the field, they contributed journal articles, made professional presentations to their peers, and have strived to make advances in the treatment of patients with renal failure.

  • Verna Willis, R.N., B.S.N., transplant coordinator, NBIMC, presented "Management of the Renal Transplant Recipient" at the NBIMC Critical Care Course, January 1999
  • Rachel Dowell-Cherry, R.N., transplant coordinator, SBMC, presented "New Options in Transplantation" at the ANNA Conference in Bridgeport, N.J., March 1999
  • SBHCS transplant management staff participated in the UNOS Management Forum in San Diego, Calif., April 1999
  • SBHCS staff attended the UNOS Clinical Forum and Regional Meeting in Philadelphia, Pa., April 1999    
  • Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., chief of Renal and Pancreas Transplant Centers for SBHCS, and Debbie Morgan, M.S.W., administrative director of the transplant center at SBMC, participated in a NEWS12 medical series highlighting the critical problems faced by transplant patients in the state who lack adequate insurance coverage, June 1999.
  • Carmen Flores, R.N.C., transplant coordinator; Sadanand Palekar, M.D., clinical director; Scott Ames, M.D., director of transplant surgery; and Catherine Schneider, M.D., attending surgeon; of NBIMC, were interviewed in Spanish for the television program, Sin Limites on Chan. 38, to educate the Latino community about advances in living kidney donation and laparoscopic donation, August 1999.
  • Eleanor Simchera, R.N., transplant coordinator, attended the "8th International Transplant Nurses Society Symposium" in Toronto, Canada, August 1999
  • Alison Jacobs, R.N., M.S.N., transplant program manager, and Eleanor Simchera, R.N., transplant coordinator, SBMC, were interviewed for "Trends in Living Donor Transplantation," published in The Nursing Spectrum, August 23, 1999
  • Three Transplant Coordinators from SBMC attended the North American Transplant Coordinators Organization's “Advances in Transplantation,” Seattle, Wash., September 1999
  • Pat Lipere, R.N., B.S.N., transplant coordinator, and Debbie Morgan, M.S.W., administrative director of the transplant program at SBMC, presented "The Living Donor: Clinical and Psychosocial Issues" at the Annual Nephrology Nursing Conference on Renal Transplantation in Long Island, N.Y., October 1999
  • Doreen White-Hatke, R.N., B.S.N., and Rachel Dowell-Cherry, R.N., transplant coordinators at SBMC, presented lectures on dialysis and transplantation to nursing students at County College of Morris and St. Francis School of Nursing

Awards and Appointments 

  • Carmen Flores, R.N.C., NBIMC transplant coordinator, received the "1999 Medical-Surgical Division Excellence in Nursing" Award during National Nurses Week, May 1999
  • Rachel Dowell-Cherry, R.N., transplant coordinator, SBMC, received a Volunteer Award by the National Kidney Foundation of N.Y./N.J. for her work with the annual walkathon
  • Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., chief of Renal and Pancreas Transplant Centers for the SBHCS was the recipient of this year’s prestigious National Medical Award by the National Kidney Foundation of N.Y./N.J. in June 1999
  • SBMC Transplant coordinators Pat Lipere, R.N., B.S.N.; Laura Bogert, R.N., B.S.N.; Rachel Dowell-Cherry, R.N.; and Eleanor Simchera, R.N.; as well as research assistant, David DeMaio; and inpatient coordinator, Debi Girone, R.N., B.S.N.; all from SBMC, were recipients of the "Excellence in Caring Award," June 1999
  • Debbie Morgan, M.S.W., administrative director of the transplant program at SBMC and Paul Mertz, executive director of NBIMC, were elected to the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network Board of Trustees in June 1999. Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., also serves on the Board
  • Laura Bogert, R.N., B.S.N.; Meg Caputo, R.N., B.S.N.; and Melissa Dowd, R.N., B.S.N.; transplant nurses at SBMC, and Verna Willis, R.N., B.S.N., transplant coordinator; and Jennifer Hinkis, R.N., B.S.N., transplant nurse at NBIMC, passed credentialing exams for Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator, July 1999.
  • Debi Girone, R.N., B.S.N., inpatient coordinator, of SBMC received the "1999 Award for Humanistic Care" by the Healthcare Foundation of N.J., July 1999
