The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Center at SBMC is now performing pancreas transplantation for people with diabetes who have already received a kidney transplant. This new program is an addition to the highly successful simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant program that has been underway at SBMC – New Jersey’s most active pancreas transplant center – for several years.
Pancreas transplantation offers people with diabetes control of blood sugar without the use of insulin or dietary restrictions. A transplanted pancreas can also delay, prevent, or in some cases reverse the secondary complications of diabetes.
All potential recipients first undergo the standard pre-transplant medical evaluation. The following criteria has been established for selecting pancreas transplant candidates:
-
Underlying disease is type I (juvenile) diabetes
-
Less than 50 years of age
-
Minimal previous abdominal surgery
-
Free of advanced secondary complications of diabetes – such as blindness, amputation, or severe vascular disease
-
Previous kidney transplant with well established renal function
