Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Department of Pharmacy is supported by 72 highly trained pharmacists, technicians, residents, and supportive pharmacy staff who ensure the delivery of pharmaceutical care for all inpatient from the premature infant to the geriatric patient and outpatients of selected ambulatory care programs. Our mission is “to provide our patients with the most effective pharmaceutical services in a safe, compassionate and innovative environment”. We provide pharmaceutical care in critical care, general medicine, cardiology, infectious diseases, neurology, radiology, psychiatry, gynecology/maternity orthopedic surgery, general surgery, robotic surgery, geriatrics and outpatient and inpatient adult and pediatric oncology and hematology as well as our Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center. In addition, our team support the pediatric patients of the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey servicing all pediatric age groups including the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Pharmacy provides comprehensive reviews of the complex regimens for our heart and lung transplant programs from pre to post transplant with a active outpatient counseling service. Our outpatient services also include: The Family Treatment Center consisting of the Pediatric Health Center, Adult Health Center, Women’s Health Center, Family Treatment Center and the Center for Geriatric Health Care. The acute care pharmacy also works closely with our in-house retail pharmacy, to ensure continuity of care for patients transitioning out from the facility. To support these efforts the hospital participates in the 340B drug pricing program which provides financial re-sources to support this work for our surrounding community.

The pharmacy is decentralized in the pediatric, oncology, and critical care wings of the hospital, and scheduled multidisciplinary rounds are attended by our pharmacists who provide recommendations to the medical, surgical, psychiatric, or extended care practitioner. The department has 4 clinical specialists who specialize in transplant, critical care, internal medicine and a Fairleigh Dickinson Faculty specializing in infectious diseases.

The Department of Pharmacy provides optimum pharmaceutical services through collaboration with all members of the healthcare team, patients and their caregivers in a cost-effective, evidenced based manner with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

The decentralized model is supported by computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE), automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) on the units, and bed-side barcode medication administration. In the central pharmacy, the pharmacists verifies orders for those areas that do not have a decentralized pharmacy as well as answer phone calls related to medication questions and oversees the overall dispensing of medications and compounding of sterile products. Pharmacy technicians support the activities of the pharmacists in the decentralized areas and main pharmacy by restocking the ADCs, triaging phone calls, compounding sterile intravenous solutions, and delivering non-stocked medications to the units in a timely manner. New orders are evaluated in the context of this information with attention to drug dosing, drug interactions, adverse effects and drug allergies.

In addition to precepting over 20 pharmacy students per year, the pharmacy department launched its pharmacy residency program in 2014 as well as graduated its first class of pharmacy technicians in conjunction with Essex County College in January of 2015. The department prides itself in developing highly qualified independent practitioners who are able to provide patient-centered care in various environments.
